Delirah Phiri, our contact in Mzuzu, Malawi sent some new photos of aid recipients. Delirah reports that it's raining frequently which is good for the crops. But fuel is very scarce and if you are able to "find it by chance..prices have soared skyhigh".

The women above receive supplementary food since their health status prevents them from farming.
The second group are farmers in Choma who receive seeds and fertilizer for three years to feed their families.
Delirah expresses admiration for Bettie Ngulube from the Choma group. Bettie (photo below) has no fingers but still tills the land and is secretary of the group. "I was deeply touched and amazed with this woman's spirit to keep working," Delirah writes.

Youth Committee

We have a small but active Youth Committee in Victoria which visits school classes and other youth groups. Sessions involve students' making an angel and learning about the people we are assisting in southern Africa. Usually a team of two volunteers is involved. The teacher and class are responsible for collecting their own donations afterward.

Marketing in Victoria

The Angels fund-raising process has many components. The Board of Directors is keen to find a volunteer for marketing and distribution of angels in Greater Victoria.

The job will require an hour or two a week for much of the year, and possibly a few hours when sales are on. The tasks are:

Research, suggest, and contact new low-cost marketing venues such as fairs and recreation centres
Maintain annual liaison with some existing venues which have been successful
Assist with set-up and supply of tables at "sale" events.

Ability to use email is required and use of a vehicle is recommended. This position is separate from supply to shops.

News from Away

More good news from out-of-town groups:

1) Sandi in Los Angeles who knows people in BC has been making angels for several years and sent another donation from her community efforts

2) a small church group in Red Deer Alberta sent a large cheque from their one-and-a half year project. A newcomer from Victoria who had made angels before suggested this activity to a group of busy young moms and young middle-aged women. Emily calls it an amazing, wonderful experience which met all their goals.
With new babies on the scene and one person moving away, the group has discontinued making angels but they send best wishes to other angel-making groups and the recipients of our proceeds in southern Africa.

University of Victoria group

Last spring a prospective student at the University of Victoria - Megan - expressed interest in making angels. Since our weekday sessions are not convenient for students, we suggested she might like to establish a club at UVic which could meet at an appropriate time. Megan took this challenge on, and after the completion of one successful term, sent this report:

With the guidance and support of AAA board members Laura and Sandra, we created AIDS Angels UVic as a club on campus. We meet every Tuesday evening for a couple hours, making the Angels from supplies generously given to us by Sandra, Carol and Barb.

The other girls who have joined our group bring creativity and positive energy: I truly couldn't have done it without their folding and crafting and gluing efforts! We had a very successful first term, raising around $200 in Angel sales on World AIDS Day on December 1st at UVic, as well as another day on campus.

World AIDS Day was especially rewarding, as I got to work with UVic Aid for AIDS and the African Awareness Club to collaborate on the day's events. A representative from the Island Sexual Health Clinic was at one of our tables which included both information and AIDS Angels. Later that day a guest speaker held a discussion on her anthropological research with AIDS and Papua New Guinea indigenous peoples. Overall, it was a great day for drumming up awareness!

A donation is a great way to honour someone who has everything, or everything he or she needs. It's a great gift when you don't know what to get for someone, or when you know they will support your gesture of goodwill.

Festival of Trees

Leadership students at Mt. Douglas High School in Victoria have made 200 angels and decorated a tree at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. This is part of the annual BC Children's Hospital fund-raiser, the Festival of Trees. The students are honouring a classmate who has been treated by the hospital.

The trees are on the main and lower floors at the Empress from now until January 6, open at all hours. You can vote for your favourite with a donation of $2 or more benefiting the hospital.

If anyone is inspired by the tree to buy an angel, Nathan and Laura found a new shop nearby to carry our regular angels. Check out Mazouna Moroccan Bazaar, 715 Douglas St, across from the Convention Centre.

News from Out-of-Town Groups

We are very grateful to the Out-of-Town group members who contribute to AIDS Angels fund-raising.

The small but mighty group in Parksville/Qualicum recently raised $900 at the KAIROS World Trade Bazaar, and continues to supply some local shops.
The Halifax group has a branch in Yarmouth which raised $442 at a craft sale. At a national sorority conference the Halifax group made $1013 plus some excellent contacts.
An angel-maker in Vancouver who supplied a table at Simon Fraser University for a few years couldn't continue, but some other angel-makers in Vancouver have taken it over.

These groups and others are extremely important to the funds that we send to southern Africa.

Trees at Empress Hotel

Every year the BC Children's Hospital has a major fund-raiser at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria. The Festival of Trees on display for six weeks presents a special opportunity for groups and individuals to support the important work of the BC Children's Hospital.

This year a dedicated group of leadership students at Mt. Douglas High School are making African AIDS Angels to decorate their tree. They are contributing in honour of a fellow student who has been helped by the hospital, and later the angels will be available for African AIDS Angels fund-raising.

This event runs from November 22 to January 6. You can check it out and vote for your favourite tree. Thanks to board members Sandra Dennis and Nathan How for making this dual-purpose event happen, as well as to all the students involved.

Videa Fair Trade Fair, Volunteers needed

African AIDS Angels will be selling angels at a table at the Videa Fair Trade fair, on November 26, 2011, from 10 am to 4 p.m. The location is Metropolitan First United Church Hall, 932 Balmoral Road, in Victoria.

We need volunteers (2 for each of time slots 10-12 noon, 12-2 pm, and 2-4 pm) to sell angels and be responsible for talking to the public about AAA.

This is a really fun event to volunteer for, and with two people available at the table you have ample time to spell each other offf and browse around the other exhibits. It is a great time to do some Christmas shopping.

Lee Ann and I will take the first time slot (10am to 12 noon) so we wil set-up the table.

The persons covering 2-4 pm will need to take down the display and pack up angels/supplies, to be returned to Pierre and Lee Ann Dil's house.

With the high price of gold these days, it's well worth it to check any jewelry donations you have received. If an earring, brooch or chain is marked on the back at 10k, 18k, or 24k, you can turn it into a cash donation.

Angels and Quality Control

We're heading into the busy season for fund-raising and look forward to receiving your angels. Please take a moment to note a few points on quality control.

All parts should be secure. Hold the angel up, or hang it briefly to make sure all parts are fully attached.
The skirt seam should be fully glued, not flapping open.
The name tag should be attached with a single split piece of raffia which is soft, not stiff, and hanging about 3 to 4 inches down the back.

Angels are handled several times and packed in boxes, so they need to be well constructed with future handling and donors in mind.

News from South African Projects

Following receipt of the second half of their 2011 allocation from African AIDS Angels, the people responsible for the South African progams sent reports and thanks:

Thembalethu (Assisi) orphanage
Sister Andrea, in charge of the children’s shelter, thanked the AAA volunteers for the funds sent in June. “You are the real angels. You have such special ways – a kind of magic touch. Your donation was highly appreciated, more than words can say. There is a world of special meaning in the words that comes your way.”

The head of the Outreach program, Sister Evarista, recently passed away and her place has been taken by a newly retired teacher.

The youngest child now at the shelter was born in March and abandoned by his mother in the hospital at Port Shepstone. “He is growing well and is spoiled by everyone.” Sister Fakazile is still helping the school-age children in their studies after the school day is finished. This has dramatically improved the children’s grades. The photo shows the children's playroom building.

There will be a change in the infrastructure at Thembalethu. The Sisters had originally found accommodation for the orphans in a wing of a former hospital. The South African government is requiring the construction of cottages which will be the homes for 6 to 8 children each. This has proven to be a better system overall but will stretch the resources of Thembalethu. The photo shows the former hospital.

St. Mary’s Hospital - Born to Live Program
Sheena Hardiman from the large hospital at Marianhill near Durban calls the AAA volunteers “stars” and thanks them all for the June contribution to the Born to Live program.

In the past year, she says, 964 mothers have gone through the antenatal classes. Forty-three per cent of those women were HIV-positive. “All of these mothers would have received treatment to prevent the unborn baby from getting HIV and the babies would receive the preventative drug at birth.”

“We have many more mothers giving birth at St. Mary’s who may not have been through the Born to Live program but come through referral clinics and are HIV positive. We give the mothers the preventative drug and to the baby at birth. These number 1908. Our statistics still show a 96 per cent success rate. These moms and babies remain in the program post-delivery until 18 months when the final blood test is taken to see if the baby is HIV negative.”

Sheena says one indication Born to Live is working is that fewer children are being admitted to hospital who are HIV positive at a very young age.

28: stories of AIDS in Africa by Stephanie Nolen. A Canadian journalist meets 28 people affected by AIDS in different parts of Africa, and tells their highly individual stories.

Help Wanted

We are looking for some specific volunteers in Victoria to increase the distribution of angels. Here are the brief job requirements:

Find new small shops to carry a small rack of angels, especially in areas not already covered. Western Communities would be welcome. Oak Bay and James Bay have good coverage already. Venues include hairdressers and an immunization travel clinic: the current list is on our website. Other volunteers will supply the angels and collect money later if required.
Research and contact new low-cost marketing venues for occasional tables like fairs and recreation centres.
Store and distribute a small amount of angel-making supplies when Vic Parsons is out of town for a few weeks. Should be in one of the core municipalities.
Store materials for occasional sale venues, including a Rubbermaid tub, fold-up table, signs, and a canopy which folds to smaller than a golf bag and has wheels. Should be in one of the core municipalities.

There are many components to making AIDS Angels work, so if you can help with one of these positions, we would really appreciate it.

Dear friends of Makeni,

I am very happy to write to you. I hope this letter finds you in good health and if so, may the name of our Lord Jesus be praised, because you are indeed good people who deserve every goodness from God.

I write to you to say thank you very much for your moral, emotional, spiritual and financial support that you gave me throughout my life. You truly have a heart to serve human kind, most especially the orphans. I pray that God will continue to bless you so that my remaining brothers and sisters at St. Nicholas Home will be able to receive the support I received all round from grade six up to the time that I have now become a teacher. Without your help all would have not been possible. I pray that in the near future I will open my own school where I will be of help to the under-privileged through education, as it is the key to success and of course good moral behaviour.

There were times in life I just felt like my whole world is gone. But your love towards us always kept me realise that, there are people in this world who care about us even though they are very far away. Your support towards me and every child at St. Nicholas Children’s Home is very important because it goes beyond what our parents and guardians would have offered. Your support is surely the greatest thing I have received in this world. I will continue thanking you and pray for you everyday as long as I live.

There are many orphans who have dropped out of school because of financial difficulties. Thank God that I have not been a victim of such. The reason why this has happened to me……….??? Definitely, …… the answer is because you have played a role of a parent in my life and made sure that I attained the required education. I am currently waiting for my Teacher’s Certificate and it appears MEC wants to retain me as a Teacher at the Centre for now.

I really don’t know how to thank you because am ever short of words whenever I think of the wonders that you the friends of Makeni are doing for us and other people around the world. May God bless the works of your hands. Zikomo kwambiri. {thank you very much} once again.

Mary Bomford

At the end of 2010, Mary Bomford stepped down as coordinator and Board chair of African AIDS Angels for health reasons. She will continue to be involved, but not to the same degree.

Mary has devoted a tremendous amount of time for more than 6 years to building a successful organization. She has inspired many others to become involved. Everyone appreciated Mary's openness, her commitment and her good humour.

Best wishes to everyone for a happy new year in 2011. Thanks so much to everyone who helped to raise funds for the projects we support for children and families in southern Africa.

Our total has slightly exceeded the amount raised last year. Our partner groups in Malawi, Zambia and South Africa will be pleased that their work can continue at the same pace.

Here is some news we have received from angel-makers recently.

1. Groups in Roberts Creek BC and Parksville/Qualicum have continued their impressive and successful efforts with high-quality angels.

2. Gondwana Gallery in Salmon Arm BC has sold out of its stock and requested more, which is made in Victoria at Cordova Bay United Church.

3. A minister in Victoria was given a Christmas card with $20 from a parishioner. Since he can't accept money, he donated the money to African AIDS Angels. The parishioner will receive an angel in return.

4. In Nova Scotia, Timberlea United Baptist Church has taken up angel-making and raised a significant amount of money. Angels in a rural store and other efforts in Halifax produce regular and welcome contributions to our total.

5. In Powell River BC, new volunteers emerged in November to produce lots of angels and have the best year yet.

6. On Saltspring Island, Seeds for Malawi had a very successful season producing and marketing craft items.

7. In Victoria, the annual Open House in November and kiosk at Hillside Mall saw lots of angels and quite a bit of money change hands. Angels in shops did well just before Christmas.

8. A group of 4 angel-makers in Vancouver did a 2-day workshop with 400 students at an elementary school. Their combined efforts raised almost $2000. The group of mainly retired teachers did a similar workshop at another school last year.

Thanks to each and every person who contributed to all these (and many other) efforts in so many ways. It's truly impressive that so many people are willing to help the cause of African AIDS Angels. Have a peaceful new year.

African AIDS Angels 10th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, September 11, 2010, The African AIDS Angels Society celebrated 10 years of successfully supporting families in Africa affected by HIV/AIDS through projects in Malawi, Zambia and South Africa. The celebration took place in the James Bay New Horizons Community Center. Wonderful and lively African music was performed by the Mufaro Marimba Band, Angels and other products were on display and tea, coffee and other refreshments were served. Board members introduced themselves (pictured above left) to the supporters in attendance and information about the projects in Africa was presented. Congratulations to African AIDS Angels on 10 successful years.

Angels Open House
On Saturday November 13 African AIDS Angels presents the annual Open House at the Swan Lake Nature House from 10 am to 3 pm. Volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts to help with wrapping purchases or greeting/directing people at the door. If you can help, please send an email to africanaidsangels@gmail.com.
We are also looking for someone to coordinate/schedule volunteers for this event. It is not a difficult job as people are willing and eager to participate. Volunteer or ask us for more information.

A group of people gathered Saturday in the basement of the Truro library to create some colorful little angels to help improve lives in sub-Saharan Africa.

The volunteers were working for the African Aids Angels project, which makes ornamental angels to raise funds for people affected by HIV/AIDS. " I started a group in Nova Scotia over a year ago," said Judy Staritt. " We've raised $5000 so far."

Starritt, who is a retired high school teacher, is pleased to see young people taking part in the project, but also got her 86 year old mother involved in angel making.

13 year old Alicia Cooke, of Bass River, heard about the angels from Starritt, who has a cottage near her home. "I love doing crafts so I really enjoy doing this, " she said.

Brenda Peters, the library's teen program coordinator, said they hope to promote volunteerism in teens, and those who take part in such activities at the library receive certificates at the end of the year. "It real community out reach, " she said "Hopefully, it catches them as volunteers for the future."

News from Malawi

September is the beginning of the growing season in Malawi. AAA Victoria sends funds to our AAA Malawi group at this time of the year so they can begin preparations for delivering seeds and fertilizer to those in need.

We have had two phone conversations with Delirah Phiri in September to talk about the project.

In 2009/2010 95 families were supported with seeds and fertilizer. The rains were good and the harvest provided enough food to carry a family of 6 through the year.

Food support continues for 21 HIV positive individuals. Delirah reports, "The beneficiaries under nutritional support are all alive and well. Some are even getting stronger, their immunity improving, and weight increasing. This is possible because of ARV's and the nutritional support they are being given."

Student support: 31 students (many orphanned by AIDS ) were supported. 11 of them wrote final exams.

Delirah said, " Expenses are covered for two Extension Workers who help us in teaching the farmers how to apply modern technology in order to improve their harvest. They also work hand in hand with communities so it is easier for us to know more about the beneficiaries."

The plan for 2010/2011 is to help 80 farm families, the ongoing 21 HIV positive persons and 30 students.

Delirah, Gilda, Teddy and Vincent consider the current costs of fertilizer and seeds when making decisions on how to use AAA Victoria funding. These four work as volunteers. AAA covers their transport and office costs but they donate all their own time working around job and familycommitments.

For 2010/2011 AAA has forwarded $13,000 to Malawi. These funds will benefit 540 individuals (based on 6 per farm family) at the average cost of of $20 per person.

Peggy Frank shares her Malawi experience

Peggy Frank of Positively Africa visited the Aids Angels project in Mzuzu at the end of 2009.
She shared her experiences with photos and stories at our AGM then on June 30 she travelled to Saltspring to meet with our sister group, Seeds for Malawi.

An enthusiastic group of over 20 volunteers met to hear Peggy's presentation. A lively and frank discussion followed covering many issues relating to HIV AIDS and the viability of the community to community projects that are carried out by AAA Victoria and Positively Africa.

Peggy was impressed by the dedication and honesty of AAA Mzuzu. She feels that both Delirah and Gilda (supported by Teddy and Vincent) contribute a great deal of moral support to the women beneficiaries. She also feels that community to community projects are one of the most effective ways of creating change and delivering support to those affected by AIDS.

Angel Board Members

Our African AIDS Angels AGM will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday May 26th.

We have two Board positions open. Terms are for one year.

We are looking for individuals who enjoy working with people, enjoy the puzzle of organizing and can commit to 4 meetings a year.

Potential tasks would be:

Volunteer Coordinator: to keep connected with volunteers, welcome new members, assist with information and access to materials.

Marketing Coordinator: to oversee marketing events such as craft fairs, mall events and open house. We have a large body of active volunteers always ready to respond to help at these events.

Or other projects that would match the skills of the board member.

Craft skills are not a pre-requisite, and we would welcome inquiries from individuals who are interested in AIDS Angels but have not yet participated in our activities.

Know any hairdressers?

In Victoria we're looking to expand the number of businesses that carry Angels. Hairdressers are examples of small local businesses that make great locations for angels. One of our racks takes up less that a square foot of space on a counter, and the people at Chamberlain Walk Hair Designers have been happy to participate.

If you think your hairdresser would be a suitable candidate, take an angel into the shop to start a conversation. Or contact Elizabeth Garrett, elizgarrett@shaw.ca, with the details and she will follow up. Elizabeth has a letter of introduction which includes a photo of the rack. A volunteer will visit the store periodically to bring more angels and pick up the donations.

Congratulations to the Peer Support class at Carihi Secondary School in Campbell River for their fund-raising efforts. Their teacher Jane Kolmatycki sent this report:

"The Carihi Peer Support class has once again made African AIDS angels to support your organization and the very valuable work that you do.

Peer Support is a group of high school students, grades 10-12, who work in a variety of ways to help their peers. Three years ago Kirstie Graham and her mother Carol came to the class with the idea to make AIDS Angels. Each year now we have spent 3 weeks making the angels and collecting money during the Christmas season. This year the students were particularly enthusiastic and we sold the angels at several locations. We are very happy this year to send you a cheque for $807.85 to help you with your work with AIDS in Africa."

Notes from Malawi

Peggy Frank of Victoria's Positively Africa visited with Teddy and Delirah in January. We are looking forward to hearing from Peggy when she returns.

The following note is from Delirah Phiri, one of the coordinators of the Malawi Project, one of the projects that AAA Victoria provides funding for (for farm inputs, school fees and nutritional support for Aids affected persons).

"We had a nice time with Peggy. Although her stay in Mzuzu was cut short we managed to show her some of our beneficiaries and what they do. This year we have helped ninety five people with farm inputs instead of fifty because the price of fertilizer came down, but when schools opened for this year we were told that fees has gone up. The results for our beneficiaries who sat for their final year are out. We are happy to let you know that most of them have done well. On nutritional support all our twenty-one beneficiaries are well. From the farm input group two people passed away due to old age. We are having good rains here in Mzuzu. We hope for good yield. We applied for a ground phoneline to help sort out our communication. Teddy is doing well, Vincent and Gilda are fine. More next time. Delirah"

News from a supporter in Halifax

Bobbi Dunham-Carter writes from Halifax. Their proceeds support the Ottawa African AIDS Angels group, as well as some funds that go via Victoria from Judy Starritt in Nova Scotia.

I stumbled across African AIDS Angels at Love Me Boutique in Halifax, NS around Christmas 2008. I was intrigued so I bought one and the next day went to work at Nova Scotia Community College. I sent out an ‘all staff’ email to see if anyone wanted an Angel like the one I found at the boutique. Our college has 13 campuses around the province so not everyone has access to Halifax. Within an hour I received requests for 100 angels. I bought the entire stock. I was given a contact name in Ottawa to see about getting more angels. Peter Tobin and Lorna Kingston from Ottawa sent me another 200 angels which sold out immediately. NSCC is a pretty amazing place to work.

Again, Christmas 2009 didn’t disappoint. Although I could only get 150 angels this year (100 from Ottawa and 50 from Judy Starritt in NS who I met earlier this year), after sending an ‘all staff’ email, all the angels sold out within minutes. To date, $2250.00 raised. I’m very happy that all funds are being used to support the cause and not going to administrative or shipping costs. All angels sell for $5. This has been a great experience. I will continue to do what I can to help.

Other developments: Last year, a faculty member at NSCC’s Akerley campus, Michelle Flanagan, started an African AIDS Angels service learning project with the with the students in the General Arts and Science and African Career Transition Programs. I’ve attached some images.

Report from Powell River BC

The Powell River Aids Angel Group surpassed their wildest expectations for Aids Angels sales in 2009. We thought the perhaps the small market had been saturated from sales over the last 6 years. But we were thrilled when we could not keep up with demand.

Each fall we start making the dolls and when we had made 100 dolls, we thought our work was done. Then a couple of members with "Angel Fever" went over and above the call of duty. One member, an elementary school teacher, made over $200 as she sold Angels to all the school staffs in town. Another teacher worked with a group of her Kindergarten moms to make 40 dolls. The dolls were sold at their school's Christmas Concert.

The highlight of the Aids Angels-making season for me was watching the Grade 7 boys and girls at my school intently making angels. They were not satisfied with making one doll, they wanted to make more! I had preceded the angel making session with a short presentation on the topic of AIDS in Africa. (If you are considering doing something like this, YouTube has some excellent videos produced by the Stephen Lewis Foundation.)

You might be wondering how much money we raised this year. Our grand total was $1338.00! Thank you to all who helped!

Gardens West features Seeds for Malawi garden

Gardens West (January/February 2010 issue) features the garden of Susan Evans and Ted Harrison on Saltspring Island.

Susan is actively involved with Seeds for Malawi on Saltspring Island. A portion of her garden is dedicated to a nursery that nutures plants which are sold to raise funds for Seeds for Malawi. The money raised is directed to African Aids Angels Victoria and these funds provide the majority of support for our hard working volunteers in Malawi.

The article provides a beautiful tour of the garden and will inspire angel volunteers who are gardeners and even those who are not. The magazine is on the newstands now. You can also read about the activities of this group in their report which appears monthly on our blog.

Like many charities we are experiencing a decrease in funds raised this year. As much as we in Canada have been affected by economic conditions, people in southern Africa have been affected even more. We wish to sustain the support for our four projects in these difficult times and you can help us.

Individual contributions of $15 and up are eligible for a Gift of Hope card in the name of a friend or relative. African AIDS Angels will send the card to you for forwarding, or directly to a name and address you provide. An image of the card is on our website.

The appearance is a little different but the site has the same content as before.

The old address will still work for the time being.

We will be revising some printed materials to show the new address including name tags and rack cards, but angel-makers can use up the stock you have now. For out-of-town people, we will let you know when the new files are ready.

Here is a rare opportunity. We don't usually ask for fabric but now we are in need.

We have had a busy season and our supplies of suitable patterned fabrics is running low. If you think you have something suitable please go through the check list below.

It is really helpful if you assist in sorting the material before we get it. Remember, our volunteers will be handling these materials in their own homes and space is limited.

Notes from Pender Island

We have lost the queen-pin of our angel-making for the time being. Rosemary is recovering in hospital from a sudden illness. The dedicated group of angel-makers has risen to this reality and is helping to carry Rosemary's current ideas to fruition. You may have noticed the beautiful display in the Driftwood Centre window in November, carried out mostly by Barb Chester and Janice Erno. Thanks to everyone for carrying the torch!
On December 5th these women and others will be selling the angels at the Christmas Sale at the Anglican Hall from 10am to 3pm. And the angels will be at the usual outlets, Talisman and Sladen's. We also have gift cards, if you would like to make a larger donation in someone's name, as a gift. Call Mary at 6431, if you are interested in this. These little angels make a lovely gift at Christmas time.

Angel Open House

Once again, the Angel Open House has proved to be a very successful event.

Thanks to everyone who contributed in all the many ways, big and small.

This one day has raised enough to impact over 30 persons for one year in the form of hospice support, Aids counselling, seeds and fertilizer, school fees, and orphanage care.

It is a wonderful way to start off the season of Angel events. Check the calendar for the events of the next few weeks.
